Aliağa was a small town in 1960's, but the population has growth since the early 1980s. This growing was related to the investment of Tupraş, Petkim e.t.c. Rapid industrialization, rapid urbanization has led to increase emigration at Aliağa. Population has growth by 789.2 percent from 1960 to 1990.

Administrative Structure:

Aliağa had been announced as a township in 1937. After 15 years, Aliağa had been announced as a municipality in 1952. It has been announced as a county in 14 January 1982 by the law(Law number:2585). Aliağa has joined to Izmir Metropolitan Municipality by the Ministry of Internal Affairs law(Law number:119) in 2004.

Yeni Şakran Municilpality:

Yeni Şakran was connected to the Bergama when it was established. But by the year of 1982, it has connected to Aliağa City. Yeni Şakran has been announced as a municipality by the year of 1983. Yeni Şakran is located 13 Km North of Aliağa and on the road of İzmir – Çanakkale highway.
